Children’s Technology Development Fund launches fourth funding cycle

Letters of Intent (LOI) are due to the TDF by Feb. 24, 2012.

The Technology Development Fund (TDF) was created in 2009 to advance Children’s clinicians and researchers' promising technologies and support their translation into new devices, diagnostic tests and therapeutics that can benefit our patients and the broader public. In addition to providing financial support to selected projects, TDF provides access to an external advisory board of industry experts in product development and a network of preferred contract research organizations (CROs) with the expertise necessary to execute specific project plans.

In the first three rounds, Children’s committed $3.6 million to support 29 individual hospital innovations that range from pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and medical devices to vaccines and healthcare IT. Each project selected is paired with a member of the advisory board who serves as a mentor—providing TDF and the investigator feedback throughout the course of the project.

TDF is already bearing results. The hospital’s investment to date of $1.3M has helped raise $5.1 million in follow-on funding from other academic, governmental, and philanthropic organizations, and the data from these projects is being prepared for submission to peer reviewed journals.

In 2012, TDF will continue to offer two different funding levels (up to $50,000 and up to $150,000) based on the current stage of development of the technology. To apply for funding, applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) and must have an invention disclosure on file at TIDO.

Selected applicants will be contacted by March 30 and invited to submit full proposals and presentations by May 1. In addition to the written proposal, all selected applicants will be asked to give a 15-minute presentation of their proposed project to the advisory board in June.
